A Summer Wedding at Alta’s Rustler Lodge
There is something about August in the Utah mountains: the slopes are green, the flowers are out, and the whole canyon feels alive. For S + P, Alta’s Rustler Lodge in Little Cottonwood Canyon was the setting for a wedding that felt both intimate and full of life. Their guests stayed at the lodge, and with the entire property reserved for their celebration, everyone had space to settle in and enjoy the weekend together.
As a Utah wedding photographer, I love when a venue gives a couple more than a beautiful ceremony backdrop. At the Rustler, the mountains were part of the day, but so was the chance for S + P to spend real time with the people they had brought together.

A private first look before the ceremony
S + P chose to see each other before the ceremony. Their first look gave them a quiet moment together before everything began, followed by time for portraits with each other, their wedding party, and their immediate families.
One question I hear from couples planning a wedding is whether a first look will take something away from walking down the aisle. I have never felt that those moments compete. Seeing each other privately is its own experience; seeing each other again with your loved ones watching, just before you get married, is another. S + P had room for both. Getting many of their portraits done beforehand also meant they could be present for much of cocktail hour instead of spending it away from their guests.

An Alta’s Rustler Lodge wedding ceremony in August
Their outdoor ceremony was framed by green mountain slopes and abundant florals. The flowers softened the scene without covering up what makes Alta so beautiful in the summer. With family and friends gathered close, the setting felt expansive and personal at the same time.
That is one of my favorite things about a Utah mountain wedding: the landscape can make a statement, while the moments between people still become the heart of the photographs. Throughout S + P’s day, there was so much love in the room and around the lawn. You could feel how glad everyone was to be there for them.

A Utah mountain wedding reception that lasted into the night
After the ceremony, guests gathered for cocktail hour before heading in for dinner. The speeches were beautiful and heartfelt, with the kind of warmth that draws everyone into the moment. Then came the first dances, an open dance floor, S’s second dress, and late-night snacks—a full evening that gave people plenty of reasons to stay a little longer.

What made the weekend especially lovely was the way it all fit together. The lodge brought everyone into one place, and the vendor team worked together to make the celebration feel thoughtful from the first look through the last song. S + P got their mountain views, their private moments, and a party with the people they love.

If you are planning a Utah wedding and want your guests to experience more than a few hours together, a mountain lodge is such a lovely option to explore. S + P’s day is a reminder that a wedding can hold quiet moments, big feelings, and a genuinely fun night—all in the same place.
